Adult Intensive Outpatient Programs: Why Choose Fuller Hospital?

Healing doesn’t have to mean putting your life on hold. You can get the additional support you need and immediately apply the lessons you learn to your daily life.

The adult intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) at Fuller Hospital, for people 18 and older, offer a balance of focused mental health support and flexibility. Our IOPs are similar to partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) but less time-intensive. They provide you with the tools, community and guidance to help you find your way forward with confidence.

Our adult IOPs offer structure and mental health care with a shorter time commitment. These programs are ideal if you need extra support beyond traditional weekly therapy but don’t need medication management.

Highlights of our IOPs include:

  • Variety of program options: We offer distinct IOPs that are shortened versions of our partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) for adults (men and women together), LGBTQIA+ individuals and women. You can choose the program that fits your needs.
  • Community of support: You’re never alone when you’re here. You can share and learn from others with similar experiences, and they learn from you when you share your experiences.
  • Real-world applications: As you learn more about yourself and develop new coping skills, you can practice what you learn at home or work that same day. This process can help turn your new skills into lasting behaviors.
  • Comprehensive group therapy: Our therapy sessions use a range of proven techniques. Methods we use include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychoeducation, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and art and music therapy.
  • Flexibility: Our programs run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on weekdays at our Attleboro, Massachusetts, location, for people living in Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Most people join us three days a week, but you can choose to participate five days a week. We also offer virtual options for those who can’t attend in person.
  • Discharge planning: We help you prepare for your next steps. Our discharge planning services include setting up outpatient therapy appointments, filling out paperwork for work and insurance, and guiding you to resources for transportation, food and other needs.

What’s the Difference Between IOP and PHP?

Choosing between an IOP and a PHP is a personal process. We can guide you through your choices, but it often comes down to finding a balance that works for your life and needs.

An IOP may be appropriate for you if you:

  • Want added support for a mental health or substance use disorder but don’t need a full-day program
  • Would benefit from a program that can provide stabilization to avoid a mental health crisis
  • Need a shorter program that fits around your day-to-day responsibilities
  • Are “stepping down” from a PHP or inpatient treatment and want more intensive care than weekly therapy sessions can provide
  • Don’t need medication management (either you don’t take medication for your mental health, or your medication is already well managed)
