What to Expect
Patients are not allowed to have the following items in the hospital:
- Mirrors
- Belts
- Razors
- Shoelaces
- Glass items (picture frames, bottles, etc.)
- Lighters/matches
- Sharp items (knives, scissors, etc.)
- Alcohol/Drugs
Additionally, the following items must be given to the Charge Nurse immediately upon entering the mental health facility:
- Over-the-counter medications
- Prescription medications
- Cigarette packages that may be returned upon discharge
Frequently Asked Questions
Each unit utilizes a checks system in which a staff member checks on you frequently 24 hours of the day. Staff ensure the environment is kept safe through frequent checks.
Fuller Hospital is a smoke-free, tobacco-free campus. Smoking is not permitted in the buildings or on the grounds. If you use tobacco products or smoke, the hospital can provide medications that aid in smoking cessation or help to manage any nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
A phone is available during free time and non-group times on the unit. Cell phones are not permitted on the unit due to patient confidentiality.
You may have a roommate and may share a bathroom.
Your treatment team will be working with you to help prepare you for discharge and staff will review your discharge plan before you leave. You will receive a discharge instruction sheet with follow-up care plans and appointments as well as prescription medications ordered by your doctor if applicable.
Being hospitalized for a mental illness can be a difficult time for both the patient and the loved ones. Patient privacy is an important part of psychiatric treatment. Your loved one has the right to privacy and may choose who can receive information about their care. For this reason, our staff will not be able to confirm or discuss your loved one’s treatment, condition, or progress without the appropriate authorization from the patient, through a signed release of information.
Even if we cannot share information with you, you can share information with us, especially if you have concerns, observations, or information that you believe may be helpful to your loved one’s treatment here.
If your loved one has authorized us to communicate with you, our staff will provide information within the scope of that authorization.
We recognize that these privacy protections can sometimes feel frustrating for families. They are intended to protect your loved one’s rights, dignity, and trust while allowing them to participate in who is involved in their care.
- Five to six sets of comfortable clothing plus one set of night clothes (must not have any drawstrings, or other types of strings)
- Eyeglasses, contacts, contact solution
- Shoes with no laces
- Medical equipment such as walkers or c-pap machines
- Books
- Alcoholic beverages, non-prescription drugs, prescription drugs, and illegal drugs.
- Large sums of money and other valuables, such as jewelry.

- All items are subject to search for safety and documentation.
- Single serve/perishable food or homecooked food, open containers, glass containers, or any caffeinated beverages/food are not permitted.
Monday through Friday: 6PM-7:30PM
Weekends and Holidays: 1PM-4PM
